Living with an anxiety disorder is no joke. And even though it’s something I’ve managed for half of my life now, there are still times when even modern medicine and yoga can’t calm me down. So, on the days when my usual methods can’t cut it, I try these other simple tricks to soothe myself.
Silence + Fresh Air
Sitting outside and soaking in some fresh air is so calming for me. At work, I’ll find a quiet, secluded spot and sit and close my eyes for 10 minutes or so, taking big breaths in and out through my nose. At home, I’ll sit on my back porch and do the same. When I’m feeling overwhelmed and I’m able to sneak away for a few minutes, this is one of my favorite things to do.
Hot Shower + PJs
If I’m home and my monkey mind starts to creep in and I know I need to bring myself back to reality, I hop in an extremely hot shower, pretend I’m *literally* washing all of my problems and bad thoughts away (don’t laugh lol) and then I put on my comfiest cozy clothes and curl up in my big reading chair.
When I know I’m going to have an especially stressful day, I always, and I mean always, make sure I book a yoga class for that morning to get all of my “jitters” out. I can’t speak highly enough for the ways in which yoga has helped my anxiety, and I feel truly grateful that I am now able to give back through my yoga teaching as well! Seriously - if you’re ever having one of “those days,” hit your yoga mat.
An Anxiety Aid Playlist
Not to brag, but I could totally be a professional playlist maker. It is without a doubt one of my favorite things to do. I am the gal who offers to make playlists for every social gathering, celebration, etc. So naturally I have my own playlist I listen to when I need to soothe my anxiety. It’s full of instrumental and/or very slow music to help calm my nerves. I always listen to it when I’m flying or having a hectic day. Best served with: a cup of hot tea and sweatpants. If you want to give it a listen, my username on spotify is tew_ and the playlist is called “Anxiety Aid.”
My husband recently introduced me to a subreddit called “Cozy Places” that showcases cozy scenery from around the world. I’m a little obsessed. Not only is it incredible decor and travel inspiration, but it also makes me feel calm and safe whenever I look at it.
Did you really expect me not to bring my cats into this? :) But really, whatever form of fur baby you may have, curling up with them is probably one of the best ways to unwind. I swear my cats can always tell when I’m feeling down or stressed, especially the little one I’ve had since he was a kitten. He always comes right over and cozies up next to me and lays for hours when I’m having an off day. Schedule some QT with your pet when your mind is running ragged - or head to a friend’s house and borrow theirs!
